Robert L. Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, 72, died April 12, 2011, with his family by his side in Mt. Gilead, NC. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2011, at Page Memorial UMC with the Rev. Duke C. Lackey and Rev. Kjersti DeVries officiating. Burial will follow in Biscoe Cemetery. Robert was born August 10, 1938, in Hartsville, SC to Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie and Doris Munn Johnson. He was a graduate of St. Johns High School in Darlington, SC and the Univerity of South Carolina. He spent a successful career in Human Resources emphasizing employee and community relationships beginning with his career in the National Guard then spent his remaining career as Plant Personnel Manager at Springs Industries Inc. (1970-1982), Director of Operations and Human Resources at LRC Truck Line Inc. (1982-1994), Director of Human Resources for U.S Food Service Inc. (1994-1999), and finished his career as Director of Human Resources when he retired from Oliver Rubber in 2007. Robert was an active member of Page Memorial Methodist Church, and belonged to various sports car clubs. His interests included family, history, gardening, and most definitely cars. Robert devoted much of his time and energy being dedicated to family and friends. Robert is survived by his wife, Betty Johnson, of the home; son and his spouse, Brian and Courtney Johnson, of Queen Creek, Arizona; 2 step-daughters, Teresa (Johnny) Maynard of Ether, Julie (Terry) Daniel of Lynchburg, VA; 2 step-sons, Jeff T. Davis, Bob Davis, both of Biscoe; 11 step-grandchildren; 5 great-great step-grandchildren; mother, Doris Munn Johnson, of Florence, SC; brother and his spouse, Leon and Anne Johnson, Society Hill, SC ; nieces and their spouses, Victoria and Chuck Miller and Sharon and Orrin Thomas; and two great nieces, Anne Katherine Thomas and Victoria Miller. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Johnson. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Thursday, April 14, at Phillips Funeral Home, 216 South Main Street, Star, NC.
